Another year has come to pass... but as we say goodbye to 2012, aren't you simply curious as to what things people considered important this year? To answer that, let us look at the most looked into source of information in the internet today, namely Wikipedia.
Fortunately for us, Johan Gunnarsson's Wikitrends project identifies Wikipedia articles with the biggest uptrend in page views each day, and he was able to come up with with a list of the 100 most viewed articles on Wikipedia during 2012 [via Metafilter]. Just below I have segregated them according to some popular industries so we can easily see this year's winners!
MUSIC:
4. One Direction
17. Whitney Houston
21. Gangnam Style
23. Nicki Minaj
MUSIC:4. One Direction
17. Whitney Houston
21. Gangnam Style
23. Nicki Minaj
25. Justin Bieber
26. Adele (singer)
31. Eminem
38. Rihanna
48. Lana Del Rey
58. Selena Gomez
60. Carly Rae Jepsen
63. Madonna (entertainer)
71. Michael Jackson
72. Taylor Swift
76. Lady Gaga
90. Lil Wayne
93. Tupac Shakur
94. Katy Perry
When it comes to music, it's not really that surprising. At the top spot is One Direction at #4, and yeah they're sort of a worldwide phenomenon nowadays. Whitney Houston comes 2nd and is likely there due to the fact that a lot of people have been reminiscing since her death (Feb 11, 2012). On the other hand, I'm kind of surprised that Taylor Swift is so low on the list considering considering she did top Billboard 200, I mean, she's even a few notches beneath Selena Gomez! Then definitely there's Carly Rae Jepsen-- who hasn't had Call Me Maybe stuck in their heads at one point in 2012? Finally, I have to mention Gangnam Style, and congratulations to more than 1B hits in Youtube!
FILM:
5. The Avengers (2012 film)
8. The Dark Knight Rises
24. Prometheus (film)
35. The Hunger Games (film)
43. Mila Kunis
45. 2012 in film
49. Skyfall
51. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012 film)
62. Channing Tatum
65. Johnny Depp
66. Jennifer Lawrence
69. Skrillex
74. Tom Hardy
There's not much to say when it comes to film except that there's a huge correlation between Wikipedia page views and Box Office sales. You could wonder though why Prometheus is so high up in Wikipedia, but is considered a big-budget flop and is only 20th in total gross sales, and why any keyword of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 cannot be found anywhere in the top 100 most viewed pages in Wikipedia considering that it grossed rather well.

1. Marvel's The Avengers ($623,357,910)
2. The Dark Knight Rises ($448,139,099)
3. The Hunger Games ($408,010,692)
4.. Skyfall ($286,505,000)

TELEVISION:
13. The Big Bang Theory
14. How I Met Your Mother
15. Game of Thrones (TV series)
16. The Walking Dead (TV series)
32. Breaking Bad
36. List of How I Met Your Mother episodes
41. List of The Big Bang Theory episodes
42. Once Upon a Time (TV series)
46. Glee (TV series)
75. Downton Abbey
80. Sherlock (TV series)
86. Sons of Anarchy
87. The Vampire Diaries
89. List of Glee episodes
All I can say here is The Big Bang Theory is the top TV show in TV Guide, and How I Met Your Mother is now on its 8th season, wrapping up on its 9th, and I think a lot of people are really looking to finally see who ends up becoming the mother of Ted's children.
BOOKS:
6. Fifty Shades of Grey
10. The Hunger Games
95. A Song of Ice and Fire
Lastly, I don't know about you but I'm a little disappointed with the book selection this year. And might I add, Fifty Shades of Grey is probably the most overrated book of all time.
In any case, if you want to see the complete list, you can go ahead and check it out below.
So what do you think, do you think there should have been subjects that made the list and subjects that shouldn't have? Do you see other industries you might want to add and share your opinion on? Did I miss anything? Don't be shy and share it on the comments section!

Wow! This is really awesome. It seems, you've done a really great work for putting this post together. And really don't understand, why people landed on Wikipedia instead of youtube searching for Gangnam Style
ReplyDeleteThanks! And yeah, seems like it could also be a case of what possibly happened to Facebook too huh.
